"The words of Christ, which he spake unto his adisciples, the twelve whom he had chosen, as he laid his hands upon them—
"And he called them by name, saying: Ye shall call on the Father in my name, in mighty prayer; and after ye have done this ye shall have power that to him upon whom ye shall lay your hands, ye shall give the Holy Ghost; and in my name shall ye give it, for thus do mine apostles" (1-2).
I believe there are several lessons to learn from this.
The first I learned is that Jesus Christ knows each name. He really knows them. He called them. As a Relief Society teacher, it's something I'm trying to do. That way I could get individuals to participate, to let them know I care for them, that I know them.
The second lesson is that we should pray to Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ. Not that we should pray, but we should call on God in "mighty prayer". The True to the Faith booklet under "prayer" reads:
"Make your prayers meaningful. The prophet Mormon warned that if anyone 'shall pray and not with real intent of heart . . . it profiteth him nothing, for God receiveth none such' (Moroni 7:9). To make your prayers meaningful, you must pray with sincerity and 'with all the energy of heart' (Moroni 7:48). Be careful to avoid 'vain repetitions' when you pray (see Matthew 6:7). Give serious thought to your attitude and to the words you use."The third lesson is that when the men are ordained to the priesthood, especially the Melchizedek priesthood, they now have the power to give the gift of the Holy Ghost unto others. Melchizedek priesthood holders should be men that are worthy of holding such a responsibility are men you can count on. Men you can turn to for help. Men that have a lot to live up to.
