Ether 14

The Jaredite leaders worked by whatever means necessary to gain power and prestige. This resulted in many murders and assassinations. This in turn caused feelings of hatred, anger, and revenge. So much so that they would kill everyone that wasn't with them. Whether it be women and children or people who weren't on either side.

How do we combat such feelings? How do we not destroy each other and ourselves?

Forgiveness.

It's such a hard thing. It really is.

In 2006, there was a milk man that held a grudge and then stormed an Amish school house, "sent boys and adults outside, blocked doorways with wood, then opened fire on a dozen girls, killing four in total before committing suicide" ("Gunman Reportedly Bent on 'Revenge' Kills Girls, Self at Amish School").

But what I remember most was that the Amish community didn't hate that man's family, they gave comfort to them. They showed love towards that family. They forgave. Of course they grieved. But they forgave ("Amish Say They 'Forgive' School Shooter"; "Amish Forgive School Shooter, Struggle with Grief").

Even when the world is faced with such horrors as this, if we put our faith and love in God, if we ask him for help to forgive, we can. It will be hard. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for this Amish community, but we must do it or risk destroying ourselves.
