"Jesus calls and commissions the Twelve—He delivers to the Nephites a discourse similar to the Sermon on the Mount—He speaks the Beatitudes—His teachings transcend and take precedence over the law of Moses—Men are commanded to be perfect even as he and his Father are perfect—Compare Matthew 5. About A.D. 34."
There's a lot going on in this chapter. Each point could have it's own blogpost, or more. I've been debating with myself, but I've decided to focus on verse 48 which seems to be the summary of all the words the Savior has spoken:
"Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect."James E. Faust said, "Perfection is an eternal goal" ("This is Our Day"). Perfection is something we cannot achieve in mortality. However, in striving for it through the Atonement, we can keep this commandment.
All the other commandments and guidelines given to us are for our good. They are so that we may know what is required to become perfect. If we strive for it and turn to the Atonement for help, strength, and repentance, we can become closer and closer to perfection. Strive for perfection. Do all you should be doing. Go beyond that expectation. We are to give more than 100% of ourselves in our search for perfection.
