When Christ was crucified, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in the land, along with many other disasters caused by a great and terrible tempest, terrible thunder that shook the whole earth, sharp lightenings, cities catching on fire, sinking into the sea, turned into a mountain, people being taken by whirlwinds and the whole earth's surface changed (5-19). It lasted for three hours. Then there was total darkness upon the land. There was no light. They couldn't light candles, torches, or even campfires. There was no any light seen, no fire, nor glimmer, neither the sun, moon, nor stars. Those that hadn't died in this destruction could feel the vapor of darkness. It lasted for three days (19-23). Now the people mourned saying if only they had repented beforehand and not have killed and stoned the prophets then their brethren, their mothers, daughters, and children would have been spared. (24-25)
President N. Eldon Tanner said:
“Today the world is rejecting the messages of the prophets of God. Is it not true that there is weeping and wailing over the face of the land because men are at war one with another? Do we not have among us many who lament the waywardness of their youth and the tragedies that befall them as they turn away from righteousness and suffer the consequences of tampering with alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, and other forbidden things? How many mourners do we have as a result of the lawlessness that is extant in our communities? We need to heed the lessons from the history of the past lest we be consumed as were some of those earlier civilizations.
“This was the message Christ brought to those early Nephite people” ("Christ in America").We need to repent and listen to our prophets. Those are the lessons we need to know. The lessons we need to apply.
